Role Overview

We are seeking a dynamic Communications Officer to enhance Mike Reader MP’s public profile and effectively communicate his work to constituents and other stakeholders. The ideal candidate will be politically astute, possess strong video editing skills or a willingness to learn (particularly with CapCut), and have a keen understanding of digital media trends.

Key Responsibilities
• Lead on external communication, including the development and delivery of a digital communications strategy to promote the MP’s parliamentary and constituency work.
• Manage and maintain the MP’s website and social media platforms, ensuring content is accurate, engaging, and up to date.
• Create high quality digital content including graphics, short-form videos (preferably using CapCut), and targeted messaging across multiple channels.
• Publicise the MP’s work through proactive media engagement, press releases, and promotional materials.
• Liaise with local media and monitor coverage.
• Track and evaluate communication performance metrics, reporting trends and insights as needed.
• Engage professionally with constituents and stakeholders online, managing public interactions and queries in a timely and respectful manner.
• Draft speeches, newsletters, articles, and briefings as required, ensuring tone and messaging align with the MP’s values and priorities.
• Design and deliver online campaigns to promote surgeries, events, campaigns, and local initiatives.
• Ensure communications activity complies with data protection and IPSA protocols.
• Support the wider work of the MP’s office as required.
• Travel to the constituency office to provide support as required.

Essential Skills & Experience
• Proficiency in video editing, ideally using CapCut.
• Strong writing and editing skills with attention to detail.
• Experience managing social media accounts for public figures or organisations.
• Ability to translate complex political issues into accessible content.
• Understanding of the UK political landscape and current affairs.
• Must have lived in the UK for at least 3 years.

Desirable Attributes
• Knowledge of Northampton South or issues relevant to the constituency.
• Some familiarity with website content management systems.

Upon appointment you will be required to apply for security clearance, undertaken by the Security Vetting and Pass Office. See Members’ Staff Security Clearance page for further info. MPs generally pay staff in accordance with IPSA guidelines.
