Job Details

Uma is looking for an exceptional person to join her small but mighty team delivering for her Stratford and Bow constituents. This is a vital role for someone with good political judgement, excellent writing skills, strong Labour values, and parliamentary experience who’s ready for their next challenge. You’ll manage her staff team and budget, ensure the smooth running of her office, and work to pursue Uma’s objectives in Parliament.

Key responsibilities

• Manage the office team, ensuring that Uma’s priorities are taken forward and co-ordinating the high-quality speeches, briefings, reports and advice she requires to carry out her role.
• Advise Uma on policy and political developments with a strong working knowledge of relevant legislation, upcoming business, and parliamentary procedure.
• Horizon scan for parliamentary opportunities – anticipating what advice or action may be required.
• Manage the budget, liaising with IPSA on office finance.
• Lead a professional administrative support function including inbox management and follow-up.
• Work closely with her Communications Advisor on stakeholder engagement and ensure Uma’s work in Westminster serves the constituents of Stratford and Bow – and is fed back to them.
• Lead on project work on key issues including organising events and stakeholder engagement.
• Deal with security matters
• Manage the MP's diary commitments, delegating as appropriate.

Required skills and values

• Initiative and creativity in dealing with the variety of tasks that Westminster presents – previous Parliamentary experience essential.
• Excellent political judgement and the ability to think and plan strategically.
• Understanding of the issues affecting constituents in Stratford and Bow and of Uma’s key policy interests.
• A positive attitude, self-motivating, organised and able to adapt quickly to different situations. Some out of hours working will be required.
• Excellent writing and communication skills.
• Experience performing a wide range of tasks whilst managing a heavy and fast paced workload.
• Experience managing a budget.
• Some experience of managing and leading teams, and of casework.
• Sympathetic to the Labour Party's aims, values and objectives

Upon appointment you will be required to apply for security clearance, undertaken by the Security Vetting and Pass Office. See Members’ Staff Security Clearance page for further info. MPs generally pay staff in accordance with IPSA guidelines.

TBC in July with an immediate start date subject to successful security vetting. An appointment may be made prior to the closing date.
