Job Details
Helen is looking for a highly motivated, pro-active individual to join her Westminster office as a Parliamentary Assistant/Researcher.
The successful applicant would work closely with Helen to ensure that she is fully briefed on Parliamentary business, both in the Chamber and in relation to Helen’s work as the Liberal Democrat Defence Spokesperson.
As an Assistant/Researcher you will be responsible for preparing and delivering high-quality written reports and briefing notes, providing professional advice as needed, attending meetings with Helen, and carrying out any tasks that arise from those meetings including drafting parliamentary questions and EDMs.
Whilst researching local, regional or national issues in support of the Helens’ work, you must be able to horizon-scan, anticipating what advice or action may be required and proactively moving these actions forward.
You would be expected to work closely with the Office Manager and other team members to identify, develop and execute both local and national campaigns.
Responsibilities:
- Conduct research on policy issues, legislation, and constituency matters and prepare briefings and summaries for debates, committees, and public engagements
- Monitor parliamentary business, track relevant legislation, and advise Helen on voting positions and potential amendments
- Provide support on parliamentary business, including preparing for meetings, drafting questions, and summarising committee proceedings
- Draft speeches, questions, and statements for Helen to deliver in the House of Commons and at public events
- Work outside of the normal working hours may be required, including attending events with Helen
Requirements:
- Outstanding written and verbal communication skills
- Understanding the political landscape, party policies, and parliamentary procedure to provide informed advice and support
- Strong research skills to gather, analyse, and synthesise information on a wide range of policy issues and legislative matters
- Excellent organisational skills to manage a large and complex workload
- A genuine interest in public service and a commitment to supporting Helen in serving the constituents effectively
- Proficiency with IT, office software, and other communication tools
- Sympathetic to Liberal Democrat values
Desirable: Interest in defence policy
