We are looking for someone brilliant to join our parliamentary office, supporting policy development and political projects. Responsibilities include overseeing research, staying updated on policy issues, communications and Jake’s political work in Parliament.


Key responsibilities:

• Horizon scanning for parliamentary opportunities – proactively anticipating what advice or action may be required.
• Leading on political projects
• Advising on policy and political developments in Rother Valley and nationally with a strong working knowledge of relevant legislation, upcoming business, and parliamentary procedure.
• Preparing high-quality speeches, briefings, reports and advice on a range of issues, and working closely with other staff to support work on select committees / bill committees.
• Working closely with the constituency office to ensure that work in Westminster serves the constituents of Rother Valley – and is fed back to them. An understanding of social and digital media desirable.
• Leading meetings with political and parliamentary stakeholders.

Key criteria:

• Experience working in a political role, whether in Parliament or public affairs.
• Excellent political judgement and the ability to think and plan strategically.
• Initiative and creativity in dealing with the variety of tasks and multiple priorities that Westminster presents on a daily basis – and a strong understanding of how to use Parliament to best support the work of Jake Richards MP. Parliamentary experience essential.
• A strong understanding of the issues affecting constituents in Rother Valley and of the key policy interests of Jake Richards MP.
• A positive attitude, self-motivating, organised and able to adapt quickly to different situations. Some out of hours working will be required.
• Excellent writing and communication skills.
• Understanding of the media environment and digital communications.
• Experience performing a wide range of tasks whilst managing a heavy and fast paced workload.
• Identify with the aims and objectives of the Labour Party.

Upon appointment you will be required to apply for security clearance, undertaken by the Security Vetting and Pass Office. See Members’ Staff Security Clearance page for further info. MPs generally pay staff in accordance with IPSA guidelines.
