Job Details
Joe Powell MP is looking for an enthusiastic & forward-thinking Policy/Comms officer to join his team in Parliament. The successful candidate will be a highly-motivated self-starter with sound political judgement.
Key responsibilities:
- Support Joe's parliamentary business inc. preparing briefings, writing speeches, submitting both oral & written questions (as well as supporting Joe’s APPG & committee responsibilities)
- Lead on the strategy & planning for the successful engagement of priority groups, inc. those associated with the relevant APPGs
- Maintain good comms & effective relationships with national bodies inc. relevant charities & NGOs on Joe’s behalf
- Monitor media coverage, prepare comms plans, produce press releases, engage with the lobby to raise Joe's profile & his work/campaigns
- Design, agree & keep under review Joe’s media & digital strategy raising visibility & enhancing Joe’s reputation locally & nationally
- Design & develop engaging, targeted content across a range of channels
- Assisting with political & policy correspondence with constituents on live topics
- Draft briefings for meetings with different groups
Skills:
- Outstanding writing skills & ability to synthesize complex information into concise comms
- Excellent IT skills, inc. social media platforms
- Ability to work proactively, both independently & as part of a team
- Be forward thinking & confident in one’s initiative
- Exceptional attention to detail
- Ability to prioritise tasks & manage a high workload
- Strong project management with internal & external partners
Experience (essential):
- Managing comms, inc. social media, engagement with national press & broadcast
- Writing experience – speeches, articles, press releases, blogs etc.
- Strong understanding of the role of an MP both locally & in Westminster
- Good knowledge of the constituency & the needs of Joe's constituents
- Awareness & personal interest in politics, at both national & local levels
- Sympathetic to the aims & values of the Labour Party
Experience (desirable):
- Producing graphics & video content
- Previous work in Parliament and/or working for an MP
- Existing knowledge of parliamentary process inc. Motions, legislation, Hansard, debates etc
