Job Details

Ben Maguire, the MP for North Cornwall, is looking for a paid intern to support his work as a Liberal Democrat MP in the House of Commons.

This is a full-time, 12-month role. Part-time candidates will also be considered.

Main Duties

  • Assisting Ben Maguire MP and his team with research on a range of routine and complex policy issues.
  • Assisting with the drafting of questions and statements.
  • Learning about and assisting in drafting responses to constituents.
  • Liaison with schools, youth groups and other organisations for MP visits and visits to Parliament.
  • Assisting with and learning how to manage casework.
  • Assisting with the management of the MP’s diary, with a focus on Westminster.
  • General clerical and administration duties.

Additional Duties

  • Undertaking and assisting with research tasks.
  • Supporting the MP with his duties as Shadow Attorney General, and as a member of the Home Affairs Select Committee.
  • Drafting comprehensive briefings for the MP on policy issues and contemporary topics.
  • Identifying local and national issues of concern to the MP and his constituents.
  • Monitoring of media and parliamentary events to identify opportunities for the MP to further campaigns and constituency issues.
  • Liaising with constituency office staff on a broad range of campaigns, topics, and issues.

Essential Criteria

  • Ability to travel to and from Westminster; occasional remote working will be permitted.
  • A strong interest in politics and current affairs.
  • Comfortable dealing with members of the public in person, by email and by phone.
  • Excellent attention to detail, with the ability to think on your feet.
  • Competent IT, research, and writing skills.

Desirable criteria

  • Undergraduate-level or equivalent qualifications and/or work experience.
  • Prior experience of working in a public-facing role or volunteering/working with a community group, charity, or NGO.
  • Solid research skills, with experience in a paid, educational or voluntary capacity.
  • Legal knowledge/background, or interest in the legal industry.
