Job Title: Parliamentary Researcher

Salary: In line with IPSA pay scales and dependent upon experience

Length of Contract: 6 months with possibility of extension

Job Details

Alex Burghart is the Shadow Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster and the Shadow Secretary of State for Northern Ireland. He is looking for a researcher to support his parliamentary activities. The post will suit someone with exceptional academic credentials who can work quickly and write clearly. A deep interest in UK politics is essential.

Main responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

• Undertake research on relevant subjects as directed
• Analyse, evaluate and interpret data to ensure Member is accurately informed on key issues
• Compilation of briefing packs for MPs, take notes of meetings and draft appropriate submissions
• Develop and maintain current knowledge on relevant areas of parliamentary business including Motions, legislation, Hansard, debates etc.
• Have working knowledge of relevant legislation
• Prepare and present briefing notes for parliamentary questions etc.
• Give advice on policy issues
• Produce frequent social media posts including video content for the MP
• Monitor local, regional and national media coverage and brief the MP on relevant issues
• Monitor social media activity and report any relevant trends to the MP
• Attend and participate in meetings as appropriate
• Work with colleagues in communications/casework to identify potential impacts from the research work and disseminate them effectively.

Capabilities required:

• Personable, self-motivated to work alone, and as part of a small team
• Strong IT skills and familiarity with various social media platforms
• Highly organised, able to prioritise and manage a heavy workload
• Ability to learn quickly and work under pressure
• Strong research, analytical and writing skills
• Personal initiative and a proactive work ethic
• The ability to maintain complete discretion and confidentiality.

Desired Experience/Qualities:

• Supportive of the aims and values of the Conservative Party
• Experience in social media content creation, graphic and design skills, including photography and/or videography.
