Job Details

We are looking for a dynamic and capable individual to join Steve Darling’s busy Parliamentary team. The work will be varied, as it will involve supporting Steve, who is registered blind, across his parliamentary work in Westminster.

This is an opportunity to gain unique experience at the heart of Parliament. Steve’s current parliamentary support worker has shared incredible opportunities with Steve, like going to Ukraine, or meeting the King. You will be working alongside his parliamentary researcher who assists with support as well, with a further great team based in Torbay.

The relevant candidate should have experience which allows them to evidence that they can meet all of the key skills required. Experience in Politics (e.g. through university studies or prior work for an MP) desirable but not required.

This job also offers a flexible work week, in order to support Steve in the evenings while parliament is sitting.

Occasional travel to the constituency will be required with travel expenses covered.

You must be OK working with dogs since you will be working alongside Steve’s very friendly guide dog Jennie (recent winner of the popular vote at Westminster Dog of the Year!)

Key skills:

Essential

Superb written and oral communication skills.

Excellent organisational skills and attention to detail.

Confident and engaging, to accompany Steve on events and act as support.

Ability to deal with constituents and other stakeholders in a compassionate, understanding, and sensitive manner.

Identify with the aims and values of Steve Darling MP.

Desirable:

Campaigning experience (not necessarily political)

Policy expertise in Health, Economy, Work and Pensions, Education or Local Government.

Event planning

Project management

Key responsibilities include:

Work with Steve to develop real-time research and policy summaries during House business.

Monitor legislative business and timings for Steve.

Accompany Steve to events.

Write emails, letters and other correspondence with Steve.

Cover other support activities as required.

Upon appointment you will be required to comply with the Baseline Personnel Security Standard, undertaken by the Members’ Staff Verification Office (MSVO). See Members’ Staff Verification Office (MSVO) page for further info. MPs generally pay staff in accordance with IPSA guidelines.

Interview/Start Dates

The closing date to apply is the 5pm on the 3 November. We expect to conduct interviews w/c 10 November to start as soon as possible after the 17 November. We reserve the right to close applications early and if a strong candidate emerges, the interview may be held sooner.
