Job Title: Caseworker & Constituency Support Assistant
Working For: Yuan Yang MP (Earley and Woodley)
Location: Constituency of Earley and Woodley
Salary: £28,000 - £32,000 FTE
Length of Contract: Permanant
Job Details
Yuan Yang MP seeks an empathetic and organised caseworker who will also spend time supporting constituency campaigns and projects in the Labour-held seat of Earley and Woodley. Over the next four years, Yuan aims to rebuild trust in politics and increase democratic engagement locally. This new member of staff will be integral to this, supporting constituents with issues and organising opportunities for people to make their voices heard locally.
This is a unique opportunity to join a fast-paced, high-performing and friendly team in Yuan’s constituency office. We are particularly keen to solicit applications from those from underrepresented backgrounds in politics such as women, people of colour, and those with current or previous caring responsibilities.
Having a can-do attitude, emotional sensitivity, and the ability to creatively think through problems is much more important than any previous political experience. The current team have come from different professional backgrounds, and we value diverse experiences and perspectives. We are open to applicants looking for a change in career, a return to work, or who are beginning their careers. We are looking for the right person rather than the right CV.
A day in the life of our new team member might look like this:
In the morning, you may be staffing the casework phoneline, responding to any and all queries that come in – ranging from serious safeguarding concerns to more straightforward local council problems
At the same time, you will be reading and replying to casework emails, problem-solving for constituents and liaising with the relevant government agencies to resolve their problems
After lunch, you might attend a training session with your fellow caseworkers with a local charity that advises residents on one area of policy
In the mid-afternoon, you might help Yuan prepare for an upcoming constituency coffee morning by liaising with the venue to confirm the booking
In the late afternoon, you might accompany Yuan to a supermarket surgery, proactively going up to strangers, introducing yourself and explaining how the office might be able to support them, and taking notes of Yuan’s conversations with constituents
Upon appointment you will be required to comply with the Baseline Personnel Security Standard, undertaken by the Members’ Staff Verification Office (MSVO). See Members’ Staff Verification Office (MSVO) page for further info. MPs generally pay staff in accordance with IPSA guidelines.
