Make UK is the UK’s leading trade body for the manufacturing and engineering sector. Collectively we represent 20,000 companies of all sizes.

We directly represent over 5,000 businesses who are members of Make UK. Everything we do – from providing essential business support and training to championing manufacturing industry in the UK and the EU – is designed to help British manufacturers compete, innovate and grow.

As a Policy and Economics Intern, you will work across a range of projects to support the policy team, but with a particular focus on finance, tax and infrastructure.

Your line management will be the Senior Economist, and you will be expected to work across the policy team and the wider directorate at Make UK to deliver your work across teams.

Key Responsibilities

• Work with the Senior Economist to support the delivery of policy and campaign content related to tax, finance and infrastructure policy, including:
- Developing research and analysis to drive forward Make UK’s campaign objectives for creating a pro-investment business environment for manufacturing
- Contributing to policy briefings for meetings of senior leaders with government ministers and officials
- Produce data analysis and insights using public data and Make UK surveys to support our evidence-based campaigning activities
- Contributing to social media campaigns and other published content
• Attending external meetings and events to bring attention to Make UK’s research on manufacturing issues. On occasion this will require delivering presentations to live audiences and speaking at events.
• Providing ad hoc support in the drafting and analysis of Make UK’s flagship reports, such as the Manufacturing Outlook survey.
• Work alongside public affairs, communications and membership colleagues to ensure a joined-up approach and deliver impactful campaign outcomes

Technical knowledge and experience

• Strong written and oral communication skills
• Understanding of business tax policy, and how it is developed and influenced
• Knowledge of parliamentary and policy-making processes in the UK
• Ability to deliver against challenging deadlines
• Excellent relationship-building skills
• Analysis and interpretation of data, with an ability to recognise the big picture
