£17 per hour, around 6 hours per week; freelance basis

Overview
An opportunity has arisen for a part-time researcher/interviewer to work on a new publication project, assisting a long-serving politician with the research and drafting of a new book. This role would be suited to postgraduate politics or history students keen to gain hands-on research experience and with experience of elite interviewing. The successful candidate will help develop the book’s structure and detailed content, based on interviews and discussions with the author, under supervision from a senior academic researcher.

Main Responsibilities
• Develop the chapter structure and proposed content, in discussion with the author
• Conduct interviews with the author to develop and capture their views on the proposed subject matter.
• Transcribe, summarise and redraft interview material for inclusion in the manuscript.
• Carry out background research on historical and political contexts and policy detail as required, especially relating to Labour party, trade union, and Scottish politics.
• Collaborate with the author to refine drafts and integrate research findings.
• Keep well-organised records and ensure the confidentiality of all material.

Person Specification
• Excellent written English and attention to detail.
• Currently undertaking or recently completed postgraduate study in politics or history (or a closely related discipline).
• Strong research and analytical skills, with experience of elite interviewing for research.
• Interest in the Labour party, trade union politics and Scottish political history would be an advantage.
• Ability to work independently and proactively to manage progress on the project
• Discretion and professionalism when handling confidential information.

Terms & Remuneration
• This is a fixed-term position offered on a freelance basis. You will be self-employed.
• Hourly-paid rate of £17, with expectation of around 6 hours per week for an initial 10-week period (total payment c£1,020)
• Flexible hours to accommodate academic commitments, and the author’s schedule.
• Interviews will take place mainly online, with occasional meetings in Central London.

Position to start as soon as possible. Initial interviews will take place online on an ongoing basis. We may appoint before the closing date if the right candidate is found.
