Job Details
We are looking for a dynamic and capable Communications Officer to join the busy parliamentary team of Steve Darling MP. The ideal candidate would be confident working with journalists, comfortable operating in fast-paced political and professional environments, and able to produce clear, engaging content across social, print and broadcast channels.
This is an opportunity to gain unique experience at the heart of Parliament. The relevant candidate should have experience which allows them to evidence that they can meet all the key skills required. Experience in Politics is desirable but not required.
This job also offers a flexible work week, mostly working in person but ability for some hybrid working from home if desired. Occasional travel to the constituency will be required with travel expenses covered.
You must be OK working with dogs since you will be working alongside Steve’s guide dog Jennie.
Part of this role will be working with the constituency party of Torbay, to assist with Local party communications.
Key skills:
Essential
• Superb written and oral communication skills, to write engaging press releases and social media posts.
• Excellent organisational skills and attention to detail.
• Experience working with social media platforms.
• Strong understanding of target audiences and the ability to craft compelling key messages.
• Ability to artwork literature.
• Identify with the aims and values of Steve Darling MP.
Desirable:
• Experience working with journalists and managing media relationships.
• Campaigning experience (not necessarily political)
• Experience with politics
Key Responsibilities:
1. Design and develop engaging, targeted content and messages across a range of channels and social media.
2. Create newsletters that are clear, informative and engaging.
3. Ensure the online presence meets the expectations of constituents, the local community and the MP.
4. Evaluate the impact of external communications and understand what works and what needs improving.
5. Manage and update the MP’s website content, keeping it accurate, relevant and readable.
6. Prepare clear and helpful media briefings to keep the MP ready for any question.
7. Lead both proactive and reactive communications with the relevant media outlets.
8. Work closely with our Liberal Democrat Council group.
