Job Details

Alex Barros-Curtis, Member of Parliament for Cardiff West, is looking to recruit a talented individual as a Caseworker to join his team in Cardiff. This is an exciting opportunity to support his work and best serve the constituents of Cardiff West.

Key responsibilities

  • Manage and resolve a personal caseload of constituent enquiries, ensuring timely, empathetic and high-quality responses.
  • Undertake effective inbox and diary management and assist with replies to routine correspondence, constituent casework and policy-based casework.
  • Draft clear and appropriate correspondence to constituents and third parties (for example, government departments, local authorities, housing associations, businesses).
  • Maintain and update case records on the casework management system.
  • Identify patterns and themes in casework and escalate issues to the relevant member(s) of the team, where appropriate.
  • Keep up-to-date with relevant legislation and local services, and be able to contribute to briefings, reports, and policy responses by sharing relevant insights from casework.
  • Assist with preparation for constituency surgeries and provide follow-up support after meetings.
  • Engage sensitively and confidentially and professionally with members of the public.

Skills and experience

  • Ability to manage own workload, prioritise and work flexibly under pressure as part of a small team, alongside being able to work collaboratively as part of a team.
  • The ability to work often under pressure and to tight deadlines.
  • Strong communication skills, with an ability to express ideas clearly and concisely to a range of audiences, and outstanding attention to detail.
  • The ability to maintain confidentiality and communicate with respect, sensitivity, and discretion.
  • A knowledge of, and an active interest in, politics is an advantage, and all candidates should be sympathetic to the aims and values of the Labour Party.
  • Experience in an elected representative’s office (and of the caseworker.mp database system) would be an advantage.
  • Knowledge of the constituency of Cardiff West, and the ability to speak and write in Welsh, would be desirable but not essential.

There may be a requirement to work outside of normal working hours or location, including occasional evenings and weekends and attending events with the MP, and occasional visits to Westminster.
