Job Details
Rt Hon Chris Philp MP, Shadow Home Secretary, is looking for a Senior Parliamentary Assistant to be based in his Westminster office.
The role will primarily run his office, manage his diary and lead on social media communications, including video editing – supporting Chris in both his constituency work for residents of Croydon South and in his Shadow Home Secretary duties.
The ideal candidate will be highly organised, enthusiastic and have a keen interest in politics. They should be an excellent communicator, have excellent attention to detail and experience of social media and campaigning. Responsibilities also include inbox and diary management, some policy research, briefing Chris ahead of meetings and media, and some IPSA budget management. As well as supporting the constituency team when required e.g. as a result of excess workload or holidays.
There is a requirement to work with a high degree of autonomy.
Key responsibilities:
- Maintain a highly professional administrative support function for the MP’s office
- Overall management of the MP's diary
- Management of office budget, keeping Chris informed of all relevant financial matters and liaising with IPSA
- Publicise the MP's parliamentary and constituency duties on Social Media and website, including paid-for content
- Conduct research and write concise but comprehensive briefing packs for the MP ahead of meetings, media appearances etc
- When required as a result of excess workload or lack of capacity (eg through holidays) assist with casework
- There may be a requirement for the role holder to work outside of normal working hours, including assisting with events as requested
Skills & experience:
- Good understanding of politics and public policy and sympathetic to Chris’s values and priorities
- Recent experience at working at Senior Parliamentary Assistant level
- â Highly organised, proactive and can take the initiative
- High-quality written and verbal communication skills
- Campaigning, including management and monitoring of social media channels
- Competency with IT, including Mailchimp, Canva, video editing etc
- Excellent research skills, with an ability to work accurately efficiently in a fast-paced political environment
- Ideally have achieved a 2:1 degree-level qualification or equivalent
- Experience of casework
- Knowledge of Croydon helpful but not essential
