Job Title: Senior Policy Advisor (Conservative)

Salary: £300 per day for 2 days per week

Length of Contract: Initial 3 month probationary contract, with a strong likelihood of extension to 6 month rolling contracts at that point.

We are currently recruiting for a Senior Policy Advisor to be seconded into the office of a Parliamentarian. This role will form a key part of a new strand of CGP’s work, to support parliamentarians to engage with international development. The Senior Policy Advisor will provide high-quality research policy analysis and advocacy support.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct research on international development, foreign affairs and defence issues
  • Produce policy briefings, background notes, and evidence summaries for debates, committee hearings, speeches and media engagements
  • Monitor developments in government policy, international institutions and global trends.
  • Prepare briefing notes for stakeholder meetings
  • Coordinate advocacy strategies with CGP and other parliamentary advisors to build a network of development-supportive parliamentarians and other stakeholders
  • Draft speeches, parliamentary questions and talking points
  • Support work with APPGs, committees, working groups and delegations
  • Draft op-eds, newsletters and social media output translating complex policy issues into public-facing content
  • Monitor media trends on defence, foreign policy and development
  • Support the parliamentarian’s media engagement by preparing press lines and background briefings.
  • Strategic planning for long-term priorities

Specification

  • Strong interest in international development, support for UK leadership in international development
  • Significant experience in parliament, public affairs, Civil Service, think tanks or political/policy roles
  • Strong knowledge of the UK political landscape
  • Excellent research skills, strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to engage with senior stakeholders
  • Strong organisational skills
  • Proactive, able to operate in fast-paced political environments
  • Ability to work in a team but take responsibility for managing own workload
  • Experience in Parliament, think tanks, or advocacy organisations
  • Knowledge of security strategy, international development or defence policy
  • Experience supporting political or public affairs campaigns
  • Align with values of the Conservative party, desire to work within the office of a Conservative parliamentarian
