About the role
Chi Onwurah MP is seeking a Parliamentary Assistant (or Senior Parliamentary Assistant, depending on experience) to provide high-level support for her parliamentary work.

This is a fast-paced and intellectually demanding role at the heart of Westminster, offering exposure to policy development, parliamentary procedure, media work and strategic project delivery. As well as supporting the MP with her policy work, the Parliamentary Assistant will also lead the media team and support the intern.

Key responsibilities

  • Researching and briefing on a wide range of policy issues
  • Drafting speeches, articles, blogs and press materials
  • Supporting media and communications activity, including rota cover
  • Monitoring political and policy developments locally and nationally
  • Drafting oral and written parliamentary questions and following up responses
  • Supporting Select Committee and APPG work
  • Leading on discrete projects and pieces of work
  • Helping manage the day-to-day running of the parliamentary office
  • Working closely with the constituency team on diary, correspondence and communications
  • Recruiting and supporting parliamentary interns
  • The role involves some weekend working and travel to Newcastle.

You will be able to demonstrate:

  • Strong political judgement and sound decision-making
  • Excellent research, analytical and written communication skills
  • The ability to prioritise and deliver under pressure
  • Initiative, adaptability and a proactive approach
  • A good understanding of the UK political and media environment
  • An interest in Newcastle, the North East and Chi’s policy priorities

Parliamentary experience is not essential, but candidates should be able to show a strong understanding of the political context nationally and locally. Applicants should be sympathetic to the aims and values of the Labour Party.
