Job Title: Policy Assistant

Working For: Kirsteen Sullivan MP (Bathgate and Linlithgow)

Location: Bathgate Constituency office

Salary: £25922-£39474 In line with IPSA pay scales

Length of Contract: Permanent

Job Details

Candidates should be highly literate and personable with a good telephone manner. They should be extremely well organised with a strong attention to detail.
You must have excellent interpersonal, communication and teamwork skills and a willingness to learn
You will be expected to act independently and provide information, advice, and support to constituents on a range of policy issues and other social issues and make appropriate representations on their behalf.
Key responsibilities
• Progress policy casework as core part of the role
• Have working knowledge of relevant legislation and upcoming business including how they impact on the constituency.
• Develop and maintain current knowledge on relevant areas of parliamentary business including Motions, legislation, Hansard, debates etc.
• To identify policy work that can be raised in Parliament and used on local/national campaigns.
• Take responsibility of some campaigns
• Prepare and present parliamentary questions
• Written correspondence to ministers
• Assist with casework as required
• Monitor social media activity and report any relevant trends to the Office Manager/MP.
• Engage confidentially, professionally, with members of the public, through telephone enquiries, social media, email and face-to face.
• Attend and participate in meetings as appropriate.
• Work with colleagues in communications/casework to identify potential impacts from the research work and disseminate them effectively.

Personal Specification - essential unless noted otherwise

• Excellent time management, able to work under pressure and able to meet tight deadlines

• Excellent written (including letters) communication and organisational skills

• Excellent policy research skills;

• Ability to write concise but detailed and politically aware briefings

• Able to manage and prioritise own workload
• Experience of research and a high standard of digital skills
• Ability to work effectively in a small team
• Commitment to aims and values of the Labour Party

Upon appointment you will be required to comply with the Baseline Personnel Security Standard, undertaken by the Members’ Staff Verification Office (MSVO). See Members’ Staff Verification Office (MSVO) page for further info. MPs generally pay staff in accordance with IPSA guidelines.
