This role would suit a driven individual with strong communication skills, sound judgement and a genuine interest in politics who is keen to learn and develop.
Working in Parliament is fast-paced, varied and rewarding. No two days are the same, and you will gain first-hand experience of the legislative process, media engagement and constituency policy issues, while playing a key role in supporting the work of a Member of Parliament.
Main duties include (but are not limited to):
• Managing the day-to-day running of the Parliamentary office, including maintaining and organising the MP’s parliamentary diary
• Supporting and advising the MP on parliamentary procedure and policy issues
• Researching policy areas and producing briefings, notes and background papers
• Drafting written materials for use in the House, including briefing notes and potential questions
• Responding to policy correspondence from constituents in a clear and professional manner
• Overseeing policy-related casework and providing guidance to the constituency team on complex issues
• Drafting briefing notes for media appearances at short notice
• Writing press releases and liaising with local, national and international media
• Monitoring media and political developments relevant to the MP’s interests and portfolio
• Creating engaging content for the MP’s website and social media channels
• Undertaking general administrative and office duties as required
The ideal candidate will demonstrate:
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Strong organisational skills and the ability to prioritise a busy workload
• Attention to detail and sound judgement
• Confidence working both independently and as part of a team
• Good research and IT skills
• An interest in politics, public policy and current affairs
• A proactive and adaptable approach, comfortable working under pressure and to tight deadlines
• Sympathy with the aims and values of the Conservative Party
Upon appointment you will be required to comply with the Baseline Personnel Security Standard, undertaken by the Members’ Staff Verification Office (MSVO). See Members’ Staff Verification Office (MSVO) page for further info. MPs generally pay staff in accordance with IPSA guidelines.
