Job Details
Helen is looking for a highly motivated, proactive individual to join her Westminster office as a Parliamentary Assistant (maternity cover).
The successful applicant will work closely with Helen to ensure she is fully briefed on Parliamentary business, both in the Chamber and in relation to her work as the Liberal Democrat Primary Care & Cancer Spokesperson.
The role holder will be responsible for preparing and delivering high-quality written reports and briefing notes, providing professional advice as required, attending meetings and carrying out follow-up tasks arising from those meetings, including drafting parliamentary questions and Early Day Motions.
While researching local, regional, or national issues in support of Helen’s work, the postholder will be expected to horizon-scan, anticipating where advice or action may be required and proactively taking these forward.
You will work closely with the Office Manager and other team members to identify, develop, and deliver both local and national campaigns.
Please note: This role will end on the return of the substantive postholder, subject to statutory notice.
Responsibilities:
• Conduct research on policy issues, legislation, constituency matters & prepare briefings & summaries for debates, committees & public engagements
• Monitor parliamentary business, track relevant legislation, advise on voting positions & potential amendments
• Provide support on parliamentary business, including preparing for meetings, drafting questions & summarising proceedings
• Draft speeches, questions & statements to deliver in the House & at public events
• Work outside of the normal working hours may be required, including attending events with Helen
Requirements:
• Outstanding written & verbal communication skills
• Understanding of the political landscape, party policies & parliamentary procedure
• Strong research skills to gather, analyse & synthesise information on a range of policy & legislative matters
• Excellent organisational skills to manage a large & complex workload
• A genuine interest in public service & a commitment to serving constituents effectively
• Proficiency with IT & office software
• Sympathetic to Lib Dem values
Desirable:Interest in healthcare policy
