Nick Timothy MP, Shadow Secretary of State for Justice, is looking for a Policy Researcher to support his work holding the Government to account and developing policy across the justice brief.

This is an important role in a small and focused team. You will research justice policy, prepare briefings and speeches, and ensure Nick is fully prepared for debates, questions, legislation, meetings and media appearances.

The role suits someone who understands how Parliament works, has good political judgement, and enjoys working at pace across a wide and complex brief.

The justice brief covers prisons, sentencing, probation, courts, legal aid, victims, human rights and the wider criminal justice system. You will work confidently across all of these areas and provide clear research and advice.

This role offers the opportunity to work closely on parliamentary and policy work at a senior level and to see your work shape how issues are handled in Parliament and in public.

Responsibilities

• Conduct research across the justice brief
• Prepare clear and thorough briefings for debates, parliamentary questions, bill scrutiny, meetings and media work
• Draft speeches, articles and opinion pieces
• Follow legislation and parliamentary business closely
• Analyse data, consultation papers and policy announcements from the Government
• Prepare lines to take, rebuttal material and rapid responses
• Support engagement with charities, professional bodies and campaign groups across the justice system
• Keep track of developments across the criminal justice system
• Support media work when needed

Capabilities required

• Experience working in Parliament in a research or policy role
• Excellent research, analytical and writing skills
• Strong political judgement and a serious interest in justice policy
• Confidence working with complex legislation and policy documents
• Highly organised and able to manage a demanding workload
• Initiative and a strong work ethic
• Ability to work independently and as part of a small team
• Complete discretion at all times
• Sympathy with the aims and values of the Conservative Party

There may be a requirement to work outside normal office hours and occasional travel for work.

Upon appointment you will be required to comply with the Baseline Personnel Security Standard, undertaken by the Members’ Staff Verification Office (MSVO). See Members’ Staff Verification Office (MSVO) page for further info. MPs generally pay staff in accordance with IPSA guidelines.

Closing Date: 27 February 2026

Interview/Start Dates

Interviews will be held on a rolling basis and an appointment may be made before the closing date. An early start date is desirable.
