Job Details

Uma Kumaran MP is looking for a Communications Officer to join her small team. The role will be to help with content creation for social media, manage relations with national and local media, draft speeches and interventions and provide support for her constituency and parliamentary activities.

We are looking for someone who is motivated and understands how to work in a small team to deliver results. 

The role will be based between Westminster & Stratford and Bow.

Duties and responsibilities:
• Deal with large numbers of standard queries, as well as assisting on more complex cases from members of the public by phone, email, social media, or face-to-face. Ongoing communication may be required
• Monitor and update a social media and online presence in the constituency
• Produce online graphics and video content, as well as publicising surgeries and news alerts etc.
• Manage and monitor social media enquiries, dealing with cases that do not need to be transferred to a higher level
• Monitor media coverage, liaise with media, prepare press releases as required (on constituency, non-party-political matters)
• Produce press releases, liaise with the media, meeting deadlines as appropriate
• Critically analyse patterns of enquiries and articulate the findings in reports and communication with the MP and other staff members

There may be a requirement for the role holder to work outside of the normal working hours and travel for work occasionally.

Skills and experience
• Media and social media management skills, including content creation and editing
• Self-starter with the ability to work unsupervised, to manage and prioritise a challenging workload and act proactively to produce content
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills - A confident and concise writer, with great attention to detail
• Strong organisational skills, ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines
• Knowledge and experience of campaigning
• Strong political sensitivity and ability to use initiative when appropriate, with awareness and understanding of current political issues
• Produce traditional and electronic materials, including flyers, reports and surveys for use in constituent communications
• Ability to produce high quality written communications appropriate to the audience

Upon appointment you will be required to comply with the Baseline Personnel Security Standard, undertaken by the Members’ Staff Verification Office (MSVO). See Members’ Staff Verification Office (MSVO) page for further info. MPs generally pay staff in accordance with IPSA guidelines.
