Working For: Merchant Taylors' Company
Location: London
Salary: £40,000 to £45,000
Length of Contract: Permanent
Job Details
We are looking for a person with an enquiring mind and excellent people skills to join our ambitious, friendly team as Policy and Operations Officer (Almshouses). It’s a key role as we diversify our almshouse social housing so that in 2028 we can add young people affected by homelessness alongside our existing independent living provision for older people.
You will lead the development of policy on issues such as independent living and financial subsidy to make a positive difference to the lives of older people in financial hardship at our Boone's Homes site in Lewisham, and you will manage operations at that site.
You will be a key member of the team responsible for developing our project to house young people. For example, you’ll be involved in developing the innovative business model and the relationship with the homelessness partner charity which will manage the housing.
You will work closely with internal and external stakeholders, for example briefing our Housing and Care Committee, negotiating with the Local Authority, liaison with our homelessness partner charity and the Regulator of Social Housing, writing inspiring communications for the Company’s members, and dealing efficiently and professionally with almshouse residents.
Experience of housing matters is not essential. It’s much more important that you are a proactive, intellectually rigorous person who is interested in the economic and social policy issues affecting older people in financial hardship and young people faced by homelessness, and that you share the Company’s values. We are an organisation dedicated to progress, fairness and people. Members volunteer their time and skills and donate to empower a range of Merchant Taylor charities, including The Merchant Taylors’ Boone’s Charity (regd. no. 214262) which provides our almshouse accommodation. We help people to achieve their full potential despite life’s challenges.
The Company is committed to safeguarding and follows Safer Recruitment practices to ensure we are safeguarding those we work with. We therefore ask that you supply your full work history with explanations for any gaps in the application documents you submit and if offered the post, we will require two employment references including your current or most recent employer.
Closing Date: 27 March 2026

We are actively recruiting and will interview applicants in the order in which they apply. This may mean appointing a candidate before the closing date. Please apply early.
