Job Details

David Reed MP is seeking a Policy Researcher to join his Westminster or Exmouth office. The successful candidate will take the lead on policy research within the team and hold responsibility for coordinating the work of other researchers, feeding research and recommendations into the Chief of Staff.

They will be expected to deliver in-depth, ad hoc research and communications advice across a broad range of issues that inform David’s parliamentary work. This will involve identifying opportunities to scrutinise and hold the Government to account, while also contributing to the development of policy positions, particularly on matters relating to international relations and national security. The role requires independent judgement, strong analytical skills, and the ability to turn complex issues into clear, usable advice.

This role suits a self-starter with a good understanding of how Parliament works, astute political judgement, and a well-informed grasp of current affairs. The successful candidate will be comfortable working at pace across a wide and varied brief.

Responsibilities
• Prepare clear and thorough briefings for debates, parliamentary questions, bill scrutiny, meetings and media work
• Follow legislation and parliamentary business closely
• Analyse data, consultation papers and policy announcements from the Government
• Prepare lines to take, rebuttal material and rapid responses
• Give advice on policy issues
• Prepare parliamentary speeches and written parliamentary questions on a range of topics
• Analyse and summarise complex information from various sources in to clear and concise written briefings
• Respond to policy correspondence from constituents in a clear and professional manner
• Lead on project work as required
• Support with routine office admin as required

Skills required
• Experience in a research or policy role
• Excellent research, analytical and writing skills
• Strong political judgement
• Confidence working with complex legislation and policy documents
• Highly organised and able to manage a demanding workload
• Ability to work independently and as part of a small team
• Complete discretion at all times
• Sympathy with the aims and values of the Conservative Party
