Job Details
Kerry McCarthy MP is seeking a Policy/Parliamentary Assistant to be based in her Bristol constituency office.
The role will include:
- Helping respond to correspondence from constituents by researching issues, drafting replies and liaising with Government departments and other agencies;
- Preparing briefings and speaking notes;
- Assist in the planning and running of events in the constituency, and occasionally in Parliament when required;
- Handling complex casework in areas of expertise;
- Maintaining an excellent knowledge of issues in Bristol East and developing relationships with key stakeholders, both locally and nationally;
- Keeping up-to-date with Government legislation and other developments;
- Other office-based tasks, as necessary.
Essential and desirable skills:
- Demonstrable knowledge of one or more of these policy areas - health, education, DWP, equalities - and an ability to learn quickly in other areas;
- Excellent research, writing and communication skills;
- Ability to manage own workload, including high volumes of correspondence, in a timely and efficient manner;
- Ability to work as part of a small and very busy team, with a willingness and flexibility to cover for other team members if required;
- Political acumen and understanding of Government policy and political processes;
- A good grasp of the issues that affect Bristol East residents;
- Strong IT and organisational skills and a methodical approach to record-keeping.
The post may require some evening/weekend work. Applicants should have a strong interest in local and national politics, a desire to achieve the best outcomes for Kerry's constituents, and sympathy for the values of the Labour Party.
