Working For: Michael Shanks MP (Rutherglen)
Location: Rutherglen
Salary: £26,500-33,000, depending on experience
Length of Contract: Permanent
Job Details
If you genuinely want to listen to people, understand what they’re going through and help solve their problems then this is the job for you.
This is a great opportunity to join my office in Rutherglen to support our casework team with all kinds of issues - anything from benefits to housing and local services.
You’ll be in touch with government departments, charities and other organisations to get answers, move things forward, and make sure people aren’t left struggling on their own.
This is the sort of person we’re after:
- You genuinely care about helping local people and making the community better.
- You can write and speak clearly, and you’re good at breaking complicated things down so people can understand them.
- You’re someone who uses their initiative, thinks ahead, and can find solutions when problems come up.
- You’re organised, keep good records, and can juggle different tasks without missing deadlines.
- You can handle sensitive information carefully, respect people’s privacy, and follow data protection rules.
- You’ve ideally got experience supporting people who need advice or help, whether that was in an MP’s office, a charity, or any job where you deal with the public.
You will be responsible for:
- Resolving whatever issues constituents bring to us, gathering the information needed and thinking practically about what solutions we could deliver for them
- Supporting the MP during constituency surgeries and other visits as required
- Contributing to local campaigns and stakeholder engagement, to help identify and respond to community priorities
- Ensuring records are kept and information managed confidentially and accurately in accordance with data protection legislation
The post is office based in Rutherglen. There is a requirement to work outside normal office hours occasionally and travel for work occasionally (expenses will be reimbursed).
Candidates should have a commitment to Labour Party values, awareness of Scottish and UK political issues and parliamentary processes. Knowledge of the Rutherglen constituency is beneficial but not essential.
Upon appointment you will be required to comply with the Baseline Personnel Security Standard, undertaken by the Members’ Staff Verification Office (MSVO). See Members’ Staff Verification Office (MSVO) page for further info. MPs generally pay staff in accordance with IPSA guidelines.
Closing Date: 29 May 2026

Applications should be received by 12 noon on the closing date.
Interviews will be held in Rutherglen on Friday 5 June. Please hold this date and we’ll let you know after the closing date if you are being invited to interview.
Application Details
Applicants should send a covering letter (no more than one side A4) and CV (no more than two sides A4) to michael.shanks.mp@parliament.uk with the subject header ‘Application – Applicant’s name’. In your covering letter say why you want this specific job, not just a job in politics – try to make it specific to this post or you’re less likely to be shortlisted!
