Job Title: Parliamentary Assistant

Working For: Pippa Heylings MP (South Cambridgeshire)

Location: London

Salary: In line with IPSA pay scales

Length of Contract: Fixed term for 1 year

Job Details

  • Maintain a strong understanding of parliamentary business, including Motions, legislation, debates, Hansard, and Select Committees.
  • Manage Pippa's Westminster diary, ensuring alignment with parliamentary business and other commitments.
  • Work with the Casework team to identify opportunities to raise constituents’ issues in the Chamber.
  • Draft briefings, speeches, and ministerial correspondence with clear sourcing.
  • Arrange meetings with Ministers to advance campaigns, legislation, and constituency priorities.
  • Support campaign delivery with the Communications team, including drafting posts, clipping videos, and scheduling content.
  • Manage the Westminster inbox and respond to correspondence as appropriate.
  • Table parliamentary questions, amendments, EDMs, and debates linked to key priorities.
  • Build relationships with MPs, staff, and stakeholders, including organising drop-ins to support spokesperson work.
  • Coordinate All-Party Parliamentary Groups with secretariats and stakeholders.
  • Maintain relationships with policy forums, media, journalists, and external networks.
  • Provide administrative support to the Westminster office.
  • Respond to routine correspondence and parliamentary enquiries
  • Keep up to date with relevant and forthcoming legislation.
  • Prepare briefing packs, attend meetings, and take notes.
  • Liaise with party researchers and external organisations.
  • Develop strong knowledge of priority policy areas and support colleagues as needed.

Occasional travel and out-of-hours work may be required.

Required Experience and Skills

  • Proactive, organised, and able to work independently and in a small team.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to prioritise and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Interest in using AI tools to improve efficiency and accuracy.
  • Ability to learn quickly and adapt to new policy areas and processes.
  • Strong stakeholder management and relationship-building skills.
  • Good understanding of parliamentary processes.
  • Alignment with Liberal Democrat values.
  • Desirable knowledge in areas such as:
  1. Energy security, climate change, and nature
  2. Environmental issues (e.g. BNG, water pollution)
  3. Life sciences and primary healthcare

Upon appointment you will be required to comply with the Baseline Personnel Security Standard, undertaken by the Members’ Staff Verification Office (MSVO). See Members’ Staff Verification Office (MSVO) page for further info. MPs generally pay staff in accordance with IPSA guidelines.
