Job Details

Charlie Maynard MP is looking for a Communications and Policy Officer, based in his office in Witney. The successful applicant will be a clear, effective communicator, who is motivated, enthusiastic and happy working in a fast-paced environment. This role will be based on a 50:50 split of time, with half of the week focussed on responding to email correspondence about policy and campaigns, and the other half producing content for the local press and social media.

Working pattern: Applicants looking to work full or part time (minimum three days per week) will be considered. 

Key Responsibilities

  • Act as a point of contact for press queries, drafting quotes and press releases for local media.
  • Working with other members of the team to develop and implement a strategy to boost engagement on social media.
  • Produce engaging content for social media posts.
  • Draft responses to constituents and campaign groups, where they relate to policy and campaigns, ensuring responses are sent promptly.
  • Monitor communication from constituents via social media.
  • Monitor social media and local press to maintain a good awareness of local issues.
  • Attend constituency meetings, events and surgeries when required.
  • Ensure information is managed confidentially in line with data protection legislation.
  • There may be a requirement for the role holder to work outside of the normal working hours and travel for work occasionally.

Skills required:

  • Good awareness of current affairs and the issues facing the constituency.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to draft clear and professional correspondence for different audiences.
  • Familiarity with social media platforms (including Facebook, Instagram, X) and an understanding of how to produce engaging content.
  • Proven organisational skills with the ability to work independently and as part of a team in fast-paced political environment.
  • Good interpersonal skills and the ability to maintain relationships with stakeholders.
  • Capable, proactive, with a ‘can-do’ approach.
  • Ability to work with discretion, sensitivity and confidentiality at all times.
  • Supportive of the aims and values of the Liberal Democrats.

Desirable skills:

  • Experience with social media content design platforms such as Canva or Adobe Express (although training will be provided).
  • Previous experience in a political office.
