Job Details

David Barratt MSP is seeking a Parliamentary Assistant to join his brand-new team to support him as the newly-elected Member of the Scottish Parliament for the Cowdenbeath constituency.

Tasks and duties:

  • Parliamentary support, including drafting motions and Parliamentary questions.
  • Assisting with MSP-sponsored events in Parliament.
  • Coordinating meetings and hosting visitors in Parliament.
  • Drafting correspondence to local groups/constituents/businesses.
  • Other administrative tasks as required.

Essential criteria:

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Good IT skills and accustomed to using Microsoft Office software.
  • An interest in and up-to-date knowledge of political affairs in Scotland.
  • Self-motivated with the ability to work effectively independently, demonstrate use of one’s own initiative, and to work collaboratively with a remote team.
  • Ability to effectively manage competing demands and adapt quickly to changing circumstances.
  • Personable and able to engage confidently in-person and online with people from all backgrounds.
  • Sympathetic to the aims and values of the Scottish National Party.

Desirable criteria:

  • Knowledge of the Cowdenbeath constituency.
  • Understanding of Scottish Parliament legislative, procedural and scrutiny processes.
  • Previous experience of working in a Parliamentary setting/for an elected representative.

Hours: 21 per week across Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays (Parliamentary sitting days)

[NB:- please note this is a part-time role; however, we would consider combining it with the concurrently advertised part-time Caseworker role to constitute one full-time position]

Place of work: Scottish Parliament during Parliamentary term-time; remotely or from the constituency office during recess

Salary: £14,700 - £24,000 per annum pro rata (£24,500 - £40,000 full-time equivalent) depending on experience and skills
