The Bar Council is the governing body and the Approved Regulator for the Bar of England and Wales. It discharges its regulatory functions through the independent Bar Standards Board.

The Bar Council is seeking a Senior Policy Officer to join the newly established Office of the Commissioner for Conduct. This is an exciting opportunity to help shape a new function at the heart of the profession’s work to uphold standards of conduct and promote a safe, respectful and inclusive culture across the Bar.

The successful candidate will play a central role in the triage and assessment of reports relating to sexual harassment, bullying and other inappropriate behaviour. Working as part of a small and dedicated team, the Senior Policy Officer will help ensure concerns are handled sensitively, fairly, confidentially and efficiently, while contributing to the development of policies, processes and best practice within this important new area of work.

Reporting to the Head of Diversity and Inclusion and working with the Advisor to the Commissioner for Conduct, the Senior Policy Officer will:

  • Triage and assess incoming reports and concerns relating to bullying, harassment, sexual harassment and other inappropriate conduct
  • Support the development and implementation of policies, procedures and guidance
  • Engage with stakeholders across the profession
  • Maintain accurate and confidential records and case management systems
  • Identify trends, risks and learning points to inform policy development and the Commissioner for Conduct’s work
  • Contribute to training, communications and awareness-raising initiatives
  • Support the wider work of the Commissioner for Conduct’s Office as it develops and evolves

We are looking for someone with:

  • An understanding of issues relating to bullying, harassment and sexual harassment and the impact they have
  • Excellent judgement and the ability to handle sensitive matters with discretion and empathy
  • Experience in policy, casework, support services or a related field
  • Strong analytical and organisational skills
  • The ability to communicate clearly and confidently with a range of stakeholders
  • A commitment to equality, inclusion and high professional standards
