Job Details
An exciting, practical internship for someone taking a year out before, during or after university, or equivalent, or for someone ready to begin a career in politics, public service or public affairs.
Based in Telford, with regular work from the Parliamentary office, the postholder will support the MP and wider team across constituency, parliamentary and communications work, gaining hands-on experience.
Essential criteria
• Strong interest in politics, public policy and current affairs.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to work independently, use initiative and manage priorities.
• Strong organisational and interpersonal skills, with attention to detail.
• Competent IT skills, including Microsoft Office and digital platforms.
• Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information appropriately.
• Degree-level qualification or equivalent experience in public affairs, events, customer service, campaigning, administration or casework.
• Willingness to learn and adapt in a fast-paced office.
Desirable criteria
• Commitment to the aims and values of the Labour Party.
• Experience in politics, campaigns, engagement, administration, events, communications or social media.
• A connection to Telford, Shropshire or the region.
• Understanding of MPs and Parliament.
Main responsibilities
• Assist with events including venue research, bookings, guest lists, suppliers and on-the-day support.
• Support projects, campaigns, diary management and scheduling.
• Learn how casework is managed and support constituents under supervision.
• Monitor media coverage and help prepare briefings.
• Attend surgeries, meetings and events as part of development.
• Provide admin support, including correspondence, emails, post and social media enquiries.
• Support research, data analysis, drafting responses, visits and communications.
• Provide additional capacity to the team.
Working relationships
The postholder will work closely with the MP, Head of Office, staff, stakeholders, constituents and community organisations.
Training, development and flexibility
The role offers practical experience across parliamentary operations, constituency engagement, communications and casework. Flexible working for study commitments will be considered where operationally possible.
Upon appointment you will be required to comply with the Baseline Personnel Security Standard, undertaken by the Members’ Staff Verification Office (MSVO). See Members’ Staff Verification Office (MSVO) page for further info. MPs generally pay staff in accordance with IPSA guidelines.
