Job Title: Parliamentary Assistant

Working For: Nick Smith MP (Blaenau Gwent & Rhymney)

Location: Based in the Constituency Office, Brynmawr, South Wales.

Salary: £25922 - £39474

Job Details

Key Responsibilities

  • Analyse and interpret data to inform the MP on key issues
  • Draft external communications, including speeches, briefing notes, press releases and parliamentary questions
  • Compile briefing packs, take meeting notes and draft submissions
  • Assist with the parliamentary diary and support general office administration
  • Progress and assist with casework, including handling complex cases
  • Respond to routine correspondence and public enquiries via phone, email, social media and in person
  • Maintain accurate data and file management in line with data protection legislation
  • Monitor local, regional and national media and social media, briefing the MP on relevant developments
  • Develop and maintain knowledge of parliamentary business (legislation, debates, motions, Hansard) and its impact nationally and locally
  • Conduct research and provide policy advice, including drafting amendments and briefing materials
  • Ensure the MP is fully briefed on questions, motions and upcoming business in the House

Stakeholder Engagement & Coordination

  • Build and maintain positive relationships with the public, stakeholders, suppliers and Westminster contacts
  • Liaise with House officials and support parliamentary duties, including APPG involvement
  • Integrate constituency priorities into parliamentary activity by identifying themes from casework and tracking opportunities (debates, PQs, statements)
  • Work collaboratively with communications and casework teams to ensure research and insights are effectively shared

Constituency & Programme Support

Support delivery of constituency-focused initiatives, including:

  • Cybersecurity education and employment
  • Youth employment and training
  • Pride in Place initiatives in Blaenau Gwent and Caerphilly

Additional Information

  • Occasional travel and work outside normal hours may be required
  • All work must be carried out confidentially, professionally and with integrity
