Job Details

Lord Andrew Stunell represented Hazel Grove as its Member of Parliament for 18 years and served on Stockport Council for six years. He was somebody for whom community wasn’t just a word, it was central to his work and his everyday life. It is for his dedication to community, to public service, and to Hazel Grove that this internship is named in his memory.

The successful candidate will be similarly motivated by a desire to affect positive change in our communities. They should be keen to learn, have excellent attention to detail, good communication skills, and be passionate about the world of politics and advocating for those in need.

This is a full-time role with a split contract, predominately working for Lisa Smart MP but with a small amount of work for HGCLD. Due to the Member’s commitments, there is an expectation to work occasional Saturdays, with time given off in lieu.

Main duties

  • Assisting with research on a range of routine and complex policy issues.
  • Assisting with and learning how to manage casework.
  • Assisting in drafting responses to constituents.
  • Attending surgeries and other external meetings as part of training.
  • Assisting on projects, including community campaigns and mailouts.
  • Liaison with schools and other organisations for MP visits.
  • General clerical duties.

Additional duties

  • Directly speaking to residents in casework or constituency outreach.
  • Learning about and assisting with research tasks.
  • Identifying local and national issues of concern to the MP and her constituents.
  • Monitoring of media and parliamentary events to identify opportunities for the MP to further campaigns and constituency issues.

Essential criteria

  • Able to travel to and from Romiley.
  • An interest in politics and the needs of the Hazel Grove community.
  • Comfortable dealing with members of the public in person, by email and by phone.
  • Competent IT and writing skills.

Desirable criteria

  • A-Level or equivalent and/or work experience.
  • Prior experience of working in a public-facing role or volunteering/working with a community group or charity.
  • Good research and/or casework skills, with experience in a paid, educational or voluntary capacity.

Interviews will be held remotely w/c 27th July. The successful candidate will be required to start on Monday 7th September or as soon as possible thereafter. Applications will be accepted up until midnight (23:59) on the closing date.
