Job Details

Alistair Strathern MP is looking to appoint a dedicated Communications and Constituency Officer for his team in Hitchin. This role will focus on Alistair’s communications with constituents on community and national issues, through national, local and social media, written correspondence, and local outreach as well supporting the running of a busy office.

This role would suit a keen, creative communicator, with an interest in politics, an eye for content creation and a commitment to supporting our community. The job will be based in Alistair’s constituency office in Hitchin, with occasional travel to London. Remote-working applications cannot be considered for this role.

Key responsibilities:

  • Creating content including videos and graphics for a range of social media platforms and tracking their performance.
  • Drafting mass communications about Alistair’s local work, including newsletters, leaflets and letters.
  • Writing clear, professional responses to individual constituents about national and local policy issues.
  • Conducting research and gathering relevant information from government agencies and other stakeholders to resolve enquiries from constituents.
  • Assisting with meetings and visits as needed.
  • Administrative support, such as inbox and diary assistance.

Essential skills and experience:

  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills and exceptional attention to detail.
  • Experience writing for a range of audiences and ability to synthesise complex information into concise communications.
  • Experience creating content, including videos and graphics, for social channels such as Twitter/X and Facebook.
  • Excellent organisational and time-management skills.
  • Self-motivated and proactive, with the ability to identify issues and problem-solve.
  • Collaborative team member, willing to support others in a small, busy team.
  • Ability to communicate to constituents with empathy and professionalism.
  • Supportive of the aims and values of the Labour Party.

Desirable:

  • Strong graphic design skills and proficiency with tools like Canva, Adobe Creative Cloud, Final Cut Pro and CapCut.
  • Familiarity with analytics tools, paid advertisements and content performance tracking.
  • Experience in a political or campaign environment.
  • A strong understanding of the UK and local political landscape.
  • Existing knowledge of parliamentary processes.
