Job Title: Communications Manager

Salary: £36,000 - £42,000 (depending on experience)

Job Details
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and issue press statements and releases to the media
- Build and maintain strong working relationships with journalists, editors, and media outlets
- Plan content and manage the SDLP communications grid
- Deliver strategic communications, including identifying and securing opportunities to profile SDLP representatives in the media
- Communicate the SDLP's core messages consistently and effectively across all media engagement
- Prepare and support elected representatives ahead of media appearances
- Monitor media and political developments, anticipate challenges, and provide proactive advice to representatives and the wider team
- Manage day-to-day media enquiries, ensuring timely and accurate responses
- Compile briefing packs, including media briefings, and assist with speechwriting
- Contribute to the development of campaigns to promote policy proposals and party priorities
Person Specification
Essential Criteria
- At least 3 years' experience in journalism or working directly with the media
- Proven experience developing and issuing press statements and releases
- Experience delivering strategic communications, including identifying opportunities to profile representatives or spokespeople in the media
- Strong writing skills, with the ability to communicate core messages clearly, accurately, and persuasively under time pressure
- Experience in crisis communications and reputation management
- Established contacts and credibility with journalists and media outlets
- A strong understanding of the Northern Ireland and wider media landscape, including print, broadcast, and online
- Ability to work flexibly, including regular out-of-hours availability to respond to breaking news and media demands
- A strong understanding of current affairs and the political environment in Northern Ireland, and a strong awareness of the SDLP's policies and values
Desirable Criteria
- Experience working in-house in a political party, public affairs, or campaigning organisation
- Experience preparing briefing materials and lines to take for elected representatives
- Experience using social media to support media and communications activity
Education & Previous Roles
A degree-level qualification, or a minimum of 5 years relevant experience in journalism, media relations, press or communications work, or a closely related field.
