Job Details

Cat Smith is seeking a motivated, organised and compassionate Caseworker to join her constituency team in Lancaster on a full-time basis (37.5 hours per week).

This is an exciting opportunity to make a difference to people’s lives by supporting residents with issues including housing, immigration, welfare, health, education, and local government services.

The successful candidate will be committed to delivering excellent public service, able to work sensitively with people facing difficult circumstances, and capable of managing a varied and demanding caseload.

You’ll join a friendly and supportive team working from the constituency office in Lancaster, with some opportunities to support Parliamentary duties in Westminster.

While flexibility is important, this is not a hybrid role. Staff may, by agreement, work from home on an ad hoc basis where operationally appropriate. This flexibility is intended to support occasional needs rather than regular home-working.

Key responsibilities

  • Manage a caseload of constituency enquiries from receipt to resolution
  • Correspond with constituents by telephone, email, letter and in person
  • Liaise with government departments, local authorities, public bodies and other organisations on behalf of constituents
  • Answer routine telephone calls from constituents, offer advice and support, maintaining a calm, empathetic manner when dealing with challenging calls
  • Draft clear, accurate and empathetic correspondence
  • Research policy and legislation where required to support casework
  • Maintain accurate case records using a casework management system
  • Assist with constituency surgeries and community events
  • Ensure all work complies with GDPR, parliamentary standards and office procedures

Essential skills and experience

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong organisational skills and ability to prioritise competing demands
  • Sound judgement and attention to detail
  • Ability to work professionally with confidential and sensitive information
  • Excellent IT skills, including Microsoft Office
  • Commitment to delivering outstanding public service
  • Ability to work independently and in a small team

Desirable

  • Previous casework or support service experience
  • Experience working with public sector bodies, charities or elected representatives
  • Knowledge of Lancaster and Wyre and local community issues

Upon appointment you will be required to comply with the Baseline Personnel Security Standard, undertaken by the Members’ Staff Verification Office (MSVO). See Members’ Staff Verification Office (MSVO) page for further info. MPs generally pay staff in accordance with IPSA guidelines.

Closing Date: 9 August 2026
