Job Details
Alistair Strathern is looking to hire an experienced and motivated individual to lead his Parliamentary office, heading up his work in Westminster and across his Hitchin Constituency. The role will be based in either Westminster or Hitchin, with the expectation that the successful candidate would likely spend some part of their working week in both locations.
The role would suit someone with experience of demonstrating exceptional political judgement and impact, including experienced Senior Parliamentary assistants looking for the next step. But direct experience of working in Westminster is not an essential requirement, and the precise responsibilities of the role will be partly shaped around the experience of the successful applicant.
Key responsibilities will be in part shaped by the successful applicant, but could cover:
- Supporting Alistair’s work as PPS to the Chancellor of the Exchequer
- Leading on Alistair’s work as one of the founders of the Labour Group for Men and Boy’s
- Helping support Alistair’s wider work Parliamentary work, including his focuses on education and energy policy, and his Private Members Bill to expand compulsory RSE to 18
- Overseeing and managing all or part of a dynamic and busy Parliamentary Office.
- Leading on the management of a wide and fast evolving range of constituency campaigns and work streams
- Lead on designing effective media and communication campaigns in support of his Westminster - Managing or supporting the management of all aspects of the offices Parliamentary budget
- There may be requirement for the role holder to work outside of the normal working hours, including attending events with the MP as required
Essential skills and experience:
- Excellent written and verbal communications skills and exceptional attention to detail.
- Exceptional political judgement demonstrated in a professional context
- Self-motivated, organised and proactive, with the ability to identify issues, problem-solve and design effective team responses.
- Collaborative leader, willing to support others in a small, busy team.
- Supportive of the aims and values of the Labour Party.
Desirable:
- A proven interest/experience in one or more of Alistair’s areas of policy focus
- Experience leading effective political teams and/or campaigns
- A track record of political impact in Westminster facing roles
